Nitrogen from our wastewater is killing the sea environment.

Cesspools built before 1973 transmits Nitrogen directly to groundwater, while septic system built after is slightly better than cesspools for nitrogen reduction.

Houses have been built above shallow, fragile groundwater.

Glynis Berry pioneers the advocacy introducing Innovative and Advanced Onsite Wastewater Treatment System (I/A OWTS) to Suffolk County, where everybody lives adjacent to the Ocean-body, and where our wastewater is contaminating the sea water.

Based on a non-profit organization Peconic Green Growth, she closely worked with County government, as well as Community and manufacturer, convinced them and encouraged them by providing visualization on mapping, developing a methodology. Her activity accelerated more than 10 years the political progress, which normally may take years.

Pilot Projects testing new systems by County started. Some of the new systems have been approved for use in standard practice. Local governments started to include the I/A OWTS as mandatory requirements.

Our focus goes on to related explorations, such as “Urine Separation” and, in wider visions, ”Water Conservation”.
